BEFORE WORKING : INSTALLING APPLICATIONS
Caution ! go directly to step 1 if the applications are already installed.
You need at least two applications before working :
One for picture managing, one for page writing.
We propose here using two of the simplest of them : Paint Shop Pro 4 for pictures and Aolpress for page making.
Both can be downloaded on the web. Supposing we are working with the windows 95 (or more) operating system on a PC.
| Open a browser (i.e. Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator) | |
| In the URL line, write the good address : http://www.winsite.com/bin/Info?500000033654 (if you are on line you can download by clicking on this link). Click on the link « download». |

| In the "save as" box, choose
a folder to save the installation file "psp414.exe" and valid.
|
![]() |
| After dowloading you can install the application. Use the Windows explorer to find the psp414.exe file. |
|
| Have a "double click" on it.
Follow the instructions during installation of Paint Shop pro. Caution : this installation will provide you with an evaluation version available for 30 days. After this time you must pay for this software. |

| Do the same way for Aolpress.
The URL is : http://www.madison.k12.wi.us/webpub/aolpress.htm Choose the good version of the installation file.
|

| After downloading, install
the application using the "aolpress-win32.exe" file. |
|

|
Your computer is now ready to work. And you ? |
STEP 1 : CREATING A FOLDER FOR YOUR FILES
CAUTION ! Go directly to step 2 if the folder already exist.
Before creating pictures and texts files, your must have enough place on the hard disk to save them in a folder.
![]() |
Have a "left double click" on the Windows explorer icon. |
| By clicking the right button on the right side of the explorer window, you will open a contextual menu. Click left on "new" and then on "folder" or "dossier" | ![]() |
| Change the name of the new folder by overwriting. It is now ready to work. | ![]() |
STEP 2 : PRODUCING AND SAVING PICTURES
Before you begin page making, all the pictures you need must be present in your folder (see step 1). The picture's files need to be of JPEG (i.e. ".jpg") or GIF (i.e. ".gif") types. You can use Paint Shop Pro 4 or more for converting files.
| Using scanner, digital camera, or video card, you must save, on your hard disk, the digital pictures you need. They could be of different types (i.e. "bmp", "tif" etc.). We have to handle them to have suitable pictures for web pages. | |
| Start Paint Shop Pro by clicking (double) on the icon (or by "start", "program", "Paint Shop Pro" and "Paint Shop Pro") | |
| Choose "browse" in the "file" menu. | ![]() |
| Click on the folder you want to browse. | ![]() |
| Choose a picture by clicking (double) on its "thumbnail" picture. | ![]() |
| When the picture is opened, look at its size on the right bottom corner. It mustn't be too big (for example no more than 640 x 480 pixels for a whole screen picture). | |
| If you want to keep only one part of the picture, select the part to be kept with the selection tool, dragging from top left corner to bottom right corner. | ![]() |
| Then use the "crop" command of the "Image" menu. | ![]() |
![]() |
If you need to resize it click on "resize" in the "Image" menu. |
| In the "resize"
tool box, click on the right button. You only need to write the new size
of the picture. Please change "width" Or "height" and maintain
aspect ratio.
For best quality, use half, third or quarter of the previous size as new size. The picture appears with its new size by using zoom. You must have a 1:1 zoom rate to see the picture as it will be on your web page. |

![]() |
The picture is now ready to be saved. Use the "Save as" command of the "file" menu. |
| In the "save as" box, choose the good folder, the good file type (JPG or GIF) and enter a file name ending by ".jpg" or ".gif". You must only use small letters and numerals without having any space and using special characters. | ![]() |
Caution ! This application must be downloaded and installed before running.
| By clicking this icon you start the application. | |
| After clicking "OK", you can observe the command menu and the toolbar of Aolpress. Please close the default opened page by clicking on the cross at its right upper corner. | ![]() |
| Using "File", "New" and "New Page" you open a new file. | ![]() |
| You are now ready to write (step 5), to insert a picture (step 6) or a table (step 7) but before let us learn to save this new file on the Hard Disk (step 4). |
STEP 4 : WRITING A TITLE AND SAVING THE FILE
See step 3 for running Aolpress and opening a new file
| On the "Title" line, write a clear title (i.e. the subject of the page) | ![]() |
| You have now to save your file in the proper folder. Click the "Save as" command in the "file" menu. | ![]() |
| In the "save as" box, choose the good drive, the good folder (i.e. "directory"). You can see in the Page location line the complete path for your file. Type a name for your file. It must be ending with ".htm". Please use only small characters and numerals. Then click "OK" | ![]() |
| Your file is now saved. You must regularly save your file during work by using "File" and "Save" command. |
STEP 5 : WRITING AND FORMATTING TEXT
See step 4 for writing a title and saving the new file before beginning typing.
| Click on the first line of the sheet to begin typing | |
| To change the text attributes select it and then use the "format" menu. You can change styles, colours and size but not the font because AOLpress is unable to do it. | ![]() |
| Some of the formatting tools can be found in the toolbar. | |
| If you want to get back, you can use the "undo" command in the"Edit" menu. This menu is also used for pasting some texts copied in another application. Caution : This is not available for pasting pictures |
![]() |
| Place the cursor on the place you need the image. | |
| Using the "image" tool, you open the image box. Browse to choose the image in your folder and press "OK" | ![]() |
![]() |
Double-click on the image . You'll see resizing handles to the right and bottom of the image. Drag the handles to resize the image. If you want to change the width and height proportionally, hold down the Shift key and drag the handle in the lower-right corner. To reset the image back to its real size, choose "Element", "Image", remove the numbers from the Width and Height fields, and click OK. (Or, you can press Ctrl + Z several times to undo your recent actions.) |
| Place the cursor on the place you need the Table. | |
| Using the "table" tool, you open the table box. Choose dimensions and "OK". You can change your table later by right click on it | ![]() |
![]() |
At first the table appears like this. It will extend while typing or adding an image in it. You can also use "drag and drop" to fill it. |
| Before making a link, you must first have at least two files in your folder. | |
| Highlight the words (or image) that will become a link. | ![]() |
| By clicking on the "link tool", you will open this link box. Browse to choose the file. | ![]() |
| Choose the drive, the directory (or folder) and the file. Then click "OK". The file name will appear in "link to page" bar of the former box. Click "OK" again. The words (or image) will appear as a link. |
|
STEP 9 : SENDING YOUR FILES TO THE WEBMASTER
| Ensure your site is working properly by opening it with à browser. | |
| First way to send your files is to copy them on one disk (or more) or a CD | You must copy all the files of the folder or the folder itself |
| Second way is to send them as attached files with an E-mail. | In such case the files mustn't be too big. You can use à zipper to compress them in one zip file (recommended) |
